RISD FLIPS

Managed by Auxiliary Services, RISD FLIPS is a community-wide sustainability initiative that collects items gently used by students during move-out and redistributes them either on campus, through donation or during an end-of-year yard sale.

In addition to benefiting local elementary schools, animal shelters, arts organizations and other community nonprofits, the FLIPS program contributes all proceeds from the annual yard sale to the Staff Council Student Award, which provides funds for eligible seniors to purchase materials for final year projects.

End-of-year collection

At the end of the academic year FLIPS volunteers organized scheduled visits to campus residence halls for students to donate unwanted items prior to move-out day. Collected items are donated to several on- and off-campus organizations or sold at the June yard sale. Among the gently-used goods we accept are:

  • art supplies
  • blankets
  • clothing
  • furniture
  • household goods
  • office supplies
  • small appliances
  • winter coats

For community members interested in volunteering, the FLIPS committee sends an email with information and sign-up instructions toward the end of the academic year.

Yard sale

Held in the early summer in Market Square, the RISD FLIPS yard sale offers goods collected from residence halls to the campus community and general public at very affordable prices, with all proceeds going to the Staff Council Student Award. Reflecting RISD’s commitment to sustainability, the festive, volunteer-run event helps reduce landfill waste by giving a variety of items good second homes.
