Payroll Office

The Payroll Office falls under the oversight of the Controller’s Office. Our main function is the accurate and timely processing of RISD’s three payrolls. This includes the verification and auditing of time submittal and the disbursement of deductions from our employees paychecks. The Payroll Office also processes all the various tax withholding deposits, along with filing the corresponding quarterly and annual tax returns. We also provide our employees with W2 and 1042S forms for their annual tax filing requirements. Our mission is to provide excellent customer service to all of our employees while maintaining the highest level of integrity, security and privacy.

Payroll tax deferral memorandum—September–December 2020

Per a US presidential memorandum issued on August 8, 2020, US employers are allowed the option to defer withholding and payment of an employee’s portion of the Social Security tax for employees with wages below $104,000 per year. This tax deferral option is effective for the period September 1–December 31, 2020 but would have to be withheld from employees’ wages and paid by May 1, 2021 to avoid penalties and interest.

We believe that deferring taxes now to then be collected early next year does not provide a meaningful benefit to our employees. Therefore, RISD has decided not to participate in this program.
